Historical: Rama, the king of Ayodhya, prayed to Agathiya Mamunivar to get Uruthramsam to kill Ravana. The sage advised Rama that if he went to Kumbakonam and worshiped Kashivisuvanathar, who is worshiping on the north bank of Mahamagakulam, his wish would be fulfilled. Similarly, Ramapiran also worshiped here properly and got the aspect of Uruthra projected on his body. Hence this place is known as Karonam. Ganga, Yamuna, Naruma, Saraswati, Kaveri, Godavari, Tungabhadra, Krishna and Sarayu all went to Kaila and visited Umapati.

Lord! All the people take bath in us to wash away their sins. We cannot bear the burden of innocence. Need a trick to get rid of this dull burden? They appealed. Lord Shiva blessed him to take a bath in Mahamagakulam, where Bheesam, the creature of the infant son, was absolved. He blessed them to go to Kashi saying that they do not know the whereabouts of Navakanniyar Atalam. Then he gave darshan to them in Kashi, surrounded by his retinue and brought him to Kudanta, made him bathe properly, visited the various temples, removed his sins and sat on the north bank of Mahamagakulakkarai to the west.

The bridegroom stands facing south towards the Mahamaga Tirtha and offers blessings to the devotees.
