Prayer: Lord Muruga was on a mission to kill Thiruchendur Suran. Then Surans second son, Hiranyasura, took the form of a fish and disappeared into the Tarangambadi sea after withdrawing from the war to ask for a loan from Pitru. Knowing this, Lord Muruga hunted him down and killed him. As Hiranyasura was a great devotee of Shiva, Lord Muruga felt guilty for killing him. In order to get rid of that sin, he sat under the kura tree of a temple near Tharangambadi and performed penance.

After that he got liberation from sin. Lord Shiva asked his son Kumara to bless him from this very place. And it is a historical fact that he also sat behind him. It is said that it got its name as Vidyakagi as it is the place where the sin of killing Hiranyasura was passed away. This is one of the shrines of Lord Muruga. Apart from Arupada House where Murugans Thiruyalayas took place, there are only two places where Kandan set foot. One of them is Vallimalai where Lord Muruga married Valli.

Another thing that is special is this Thiruvidaikkazhi, where Murugan performed penance to get rid of sins. Lord Muruga worshiped Lord Shiva sitting under the Kura tree, Lord Rahu worshiped Lord Muruga. Thus if people with Rahu dosha come here and pray, marriage will happen soon. The unity between the couple will be strengthened. It is believed that in this temple which has no Navagraha, Lord Muruga himself is the Nava Nayayak. It is said that by worshiping this Lord Muruga, all kinds of navagraha doshas will be removed.
