Temple Specialty
Tourist: The first of the 108 divine divyadesams. This is called Bhooloka Vaikundam. It is believed that all Perumals who have risen in other Divya desams rise in this Divya Desam, visit Sri Ranganathar as Visvarupam, and thereafter go to their Divya Desam from here. Divya desam temple means the temple which has Mangalasasanam done by 11 Alwars. In Vaishnavism, the epithet Koil belongs only to this temple.
It was at this site that Andal, Tiruppanazhwar and BiBi Nachiyar attain the Thiruvadi of Lord Arangan. It is the tallest temple in Asia with 13 tiers and 236-feet tall Rajagopuram. Among the eight temples (Swayam Vyakta Kshetras) where Lord Vishnu appeared by himself, Srirangam is the most famous and primary temple. It is the first of the 108 main Vishnu temples (Divya Desams) and is a world famous Divya Desam. It also offers Tiruvaranga Tirupati, Big Temple, Bhooloka Vaikundam and Bhoka Mandapam. In Vaishnava dialect the word &ldquotemple&rdquo refers only to this temple. The temple is awe-inspiringly large.
The area of the temple complex is 156 acres. This temple consists of seven prakaras namely Thiruvennazhi Prakaram, Raja Mahendran Thiruchchuttru, Kulasekaran Thiruchchuttru, Alinadan Thiruchchuttru, Akalangan Thiruchchuttru, Thiruvikraman Veethi, Kaliyuga Raman Thiruveethi. These prakaras are constructed with massive walls that surround the sanctum sanctorum. All in all, there are 21 awe-inspiring gopurams, offering a unique sight to anyone who comes for darshan. The temple is situated on an island surrounded by the Twin Rivers Cauvery and Kollidam.
Special features Temple - Big temple Ur - Perarangam Perumal - Big Perumal Mother - Big Pratiyar Neivedyam - Big Neivedyam Instrument Big drum (Odal) Bakshanams - Big Tirupaniyaram Thirumanjanam - Big Thirumanjanam Tirupavadai - Big Tiruppavadai Utsavam - Big Adhyayana Utsavam Jeer - Big Jeeyar (Manavala Mamuni) The important feature of this place is that everything is big. It is the only temple where festivals are regularly held throughout the year. The administration of the temple was established by Bhagavad Sri Ramanuja and the practice is followed till date. It is special that Thondaradi Podiyazhwar, who sang Tirupalliyezhuchi did not offer Mangalasasanam to any other Divya desam Perumals other than the Lord Arangan in this temple. The special feature of this temple is that in the early morning Vishwarupa Seva held in the presence of Kaaraam cow, horse and elephant. Ramanujar Sri Ramanujar designed the administrative plans of this magnificent temple..
He was born as an avatar of Adiseshan in Sriperumbudur on Thursday in the month of Chitrai in the year 1017. He incarnated as Adisesha to Maha Vishnu in the Treta Yuga, as Balarama, the elder of Sri Krishna in the Dwapara Yuga, and as Ramanuja in the Kali Yuga and established Visishtadvaita Siddhanta. He reformed the temple administration schemes. He appointed non-brahmins also in temple services. He specially revised the Thiruvaradhanas and sannathi utsavams according to the Paramesvara Samhita in the Pancharatra Agama.
Ramanuja lived for 120 years and left this world to attain Paramapada. Ramanuja`s Thirumeni is emerged where he was breathed last in the Akalangan Thiruchchuttru inside the temple. Thats why this thirumeni is called Thanana Thirumeni. It is now worshipped as a shrine. In this sanctum, there is no Thirumanjanam for the Source, instead saffron, green camphor and sandalwood are mixed in Tirumeni twice a year in the tamil Aippasi month and Chitrai month. Dhanvanthri Dhanvanthri shrine is located in front of Paramapada gate in Alinadan thiruchchuttru which is the fourth prakaram in this temple.

At Dhanvandri shrine, Thirumanjanam is held only on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. There is no Thirumanjanam throughout the tamil month of Margazhi.
