Historical: About 400 years back, there lived a king by the name Maveli Chakravarthi who ruled a region in the Northern part of the country. He was renowned for his love towards God and was overwhelmed by the grace and the love of the divinity. Once the king decided to visit the divine shrine of Rameshwaram, built by the Lord Thirumal, the possessor of Chakra. The king, who worships God with all customary practices thrice a day, started to travel with his horses and he halted under a tree of a forest. The next morning while the sun shone, when the birds were chirping, the king as usual started to chant praises of God and performed his regular Pooja.During the Pooja Theertha pathram, the utensil used to hold the holy water disappeared. The king was unhappy and started praying to seek the reason for the disappearance of the Theertha pathram.

Instantly, there was an Disembodied voice - Asareeri from the heavens which said, “Oh king, the great worshipper of the creator, the great devotee of the God, under the very tree where you are performing sacred worship is my divine image and I am the Goddess Kanniyamman. With your devotion and your fortune you are blessed to worship me as well and I will be revealed to the world through your grace”. Hearing this the king thanked the Goddess for being so gracious for him. Immediately with the help of the “Ocha vazhi” people from “Radhanoor” the king revealed the idol of the Goddess and rejoiced by performing poojas. As he was on his way to Rameshwaram, he appointed the Ocha vazhi people as the Pattars (the righteous people to perform Poojas for the Goddess). The king offered fertile lands for the same reason and we now learn that the descendants of the same Ocha vazhi people are still continuing the pooja for the Goddess.
