Temple Specialty

Historical: In the Artha mandapam before the sanctum sanctorum, lies the `Kanga samara boopalanam` a gilted throne where the urchava moorthies are present. In the maha mandapam, the sukravara kuradu attracts all. During Fridays `Unjal Seva` is performed here. The `Madavi pandal` with its keralite style roof carved out of teak in the mani mandapam is praised in the 18th stanza of thiruppavai. The walls of the inner prakaram are adored with the oil painting of the deities of the 108 Divya desams. The sanctum Sanctorum has a vimanam containing thirty sculptures illustrating the 30 Pasurams of Thirupavai and is made out of mortar.

It is aptly called the thiruppavai vimanam. In the palce adjacent to the `Dwaja Stambam` (Kodimaram), there are the statues of venugopalan, raman, lakshmanan, saraswathi, mayan, ayomuki, manmathan, mohini, rathi, sakthi, arjhunan, kannan, veerabathirar etc. They are carved out of single stone. They expose the architechural splendour of the period. The Kannadi maligai (Mirror Hall) on the northern side is very beautiful and impressive. The wooden carvings of the old car were removed and they now adorn the `Gopala vilasam`. They represent episodes from Ramayana, Mahabharatha and one cannot but wonder at the Aesthetic beauty.

Tank Information

Thirumukkulam: Tirumukulam, which belongs to this temple, is about 12 acres in area and is located about 1/2 km west of this temple. Before Thirumukulam, Pallikonda Paraman came here to slay a monster called Kalanemi. After destroying him with his Sudarshana chakra, to purify that chakra, he thought of the three divine rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati in his mind, and all the three rivers came together and watered Sudarshana. It becomes a lake and becomes a holy abode as Tirumukkulam with three rivers. In this pool, after the Arasamara reading, a statue of Sudarsana Perumal has risen towards the north. Chakrathalwar can be visited when the water in the pond is very low.
